Entering the Rift

Rift--a deep crack; a crevice in the ground -fracture -fissure -opening. It's an apt name for the rig more than less becoming the name bringing Virtual Reality to the public. Oculus isn't new by any means, but they are building some serious momentum lately, and I'm not just talking about the fact that pretty soon major titles like Fallout by video game giant, Bethesda are getting the VR treatment. Entertainment is awesome, but tools are more so for the simple fact that in the right hands they can create anything, and that's exactly what the coolest thing we've ever seen come from VR is. 

I still get excited every time I dive into a new project on Zbrush, and that program is always getting cooler as well, but absolutely nothing could have prepared me for the experience of virtual sculpting. Yep, virtual sculpting -at work -at 3D Proven Systems. Full blown, unfettered creation inside a virtual environment. There's really no substitute for the actual experience, but imagine at the flick of a button you're brining matter out of thin air and shaping it just like you would clay. It's like magic happening right in front of your eyes. So far I've been able to check the shape of mask by holding up to my own face, and even sculpted the gullet of a giant sandworm from inside it's mouth.

I've never experience anything like the ability to create using Virtual Reality. It is by far one of the most unique and most fun ways to sculpt. While the program isn't quite a year old, Medium's developers have made some impressive updates, that I'm sure are going to continue in great ways. If you ever get a chance to try it, or any Oculus program, I highly recommend it. If you're in the Albuquerque and don't know where you're going to find one, you might just be in luck... 


Virtual Reality has always been a part of who we are at 3D Proven Systems, and while our forays aren't what the originally were, we're more excited about the new direction we're taking. We are already offering virtual sculpting on projects for our clients, and already have a few in process. Our plans don't stop there. During the coming months and year, we're actively seeking ways to give the general public here in Albuquerque, and all of New Mexcio, greater access to the tools we use. More on that later.
